ACTIVITIES
WOW Club
WOW Club (Walk or Wheel) ties in closely with Health Club – following the Monday morning Dancercise and a nutritious lunch, our group goes out and about exploring the green spaces of Oldham and the surrounding areas. We leave Pennine Mencap HQ after lunch and make our way to a local park or beauty spot, either on foot or by public transport, should we choose to go further afield.

Our regular Walking Group spots include Alexandra Park, Daisy Nook, and Chadderton Hall Park, but we end up all around and about the borough! Last year, our Pennine Mencap walking team undertook a Halloween-themed sponsored walk around Ladybower Reservoir, where we raised over £500 for the charity.

With support from the GM Walking and Wheeling fund, we have been able to better establish our WOW Club as a way to encourage adults with learning disabilities to be more active and spend more time in nature. This has been highly beneficial for our regular WOW Club members as it promotes physical activity among people who would perhaps otherwise not engage with, along with their mental wellbeing as it provides a respite from the day-to-day and allows them the time to decompress.
WOW Club also encourages social interaction among the group as it allows people to connect and interact outside of a more structure activity, and allows them to work together to plan a route to take. Continuing on with that theme of encouragement, below are some accessible walking guides for some nature spots located in Greater Manchester that we hope will allow people to get out into nature and improve their overall health.
